"Expanding Your Horizons" Conference Seeks Student Participants and Adult Volunteers
The 17th annual "Expanding Your Horizons" Conference for seventh and eighth grade young women takes place on Sat., March 14 at Santa Rosa Junior College. The event is cosponsored by SSU, Agilent Technologies and many community organizations and groups.
"Expanding Your Horizons" aims to increase the awareness of young women and their parents of the importance of adequate preparation in math and science. It is designed to introduce them to the world of math, engineering, science and other fields in which high school math and science are required. The conference consists of hands-on workshops conducted by women who have chosen a career in one of these fields, and also features sessions designed for parents and educators.
Seventh and eighth grade students from throughout Sonoma, Lake and Mendocino counties are invited to attend. Attendance is limited to 400 students. Pre-registration is required by Fri., March 6. Students can register online at the "Expanding Your Horizons" website, download a paper form or call the hotline at 707.664.2241 to request a paper registration form. The registration fee is $15 per student and includes snacks and lunch. Scholarships are also available by calling the hotline.
Adult volunteers are also needed to help organize the conference and help on the day it takes place. For those interested in helping, contact Sharon Cabaniss, mathematics, at 4-3921 or email cabaniss@sonoma.edu.
