Accessible Technology Initiative

Introduction to ATI
The Accessible Technology Initiative (ATI) is the CSU commitment to providing access to information resources and technologies for students and the university's public with disabilities (physical, sensory, cognitive and learning).
ATI serves as a roadmap for ensuring accessibility based on state and federal law. SSU supports the idea of an equitable environment for all diverse students, employees and others who interact with us.
CAM Database of Accessible Textbooks Quickly Increasing
Disability Services for Students (DSS) receives accommodation requests
from students to convert their textbooks into an accessible format, a
process more commonly known as "alternate media."
Upon receiving these alternate media request, the DSS office uses a
CSU-administered database called the Center for Alternate Media (CAM).
This CAM database is a collection of electronic versions of textbooks that
have been uploaded by each CSU. If a textbook is already in the CAM
database, the amount of time it takes DSS to produce the alternate media
for the student is drastically reduced.
As reflected in the percentage rates below, there is an increase in the
number of textbooks available through the CAM database.
•Spring 2009: 43% available on CAM
•Fall 2008: 36% available on CAM
•Spring 2008: 9% available on CAM
•Fall 2007: 10% available on CAM
Between spring 2008 and spring 2009, the number of textbooks available on CAM has increased by 34%.
"The percentage rates will most certainly continue to rise in the future,
as more textbooks get added to this database," says Scott Kupferman, assistive technology specialist and lab coordinator for DSS.
Universal Design for Learning Workshop
Have you ever asked yourself, "How can I meet the needs of students who struggle to learn for a variety of reasons without compromising the rigorous standards of my course?" Implementing the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) enables you to effectively and creatively design and teach your course in a way that makes learning accessible to a wider range of students. UDL is a proactive approach to designing course instruction, materials, and content to benefit students of all learning styles without afterthought-based adaptation or retrofitting. All are invited to the upcoming workshop and discussion on UDL and its potential benefits, with presenter Emiliano Ayala. Register at http://tinyurl.com/2w67uk
