Professor's Water Photos Featured on KQED
Laura Watt, professor of environmental studies and planning, will have her images of water featured on KQED's QUEST science and nature television program as part of the ongoing series of shorts on Tues., March 17 at 7:30 p.m. on KQED 9.
"I live on the water and spend as much time as possible out on it, and have become fascinated with photographing its changing colors and patterns and textures — both out on the bay and wherever else I might find this precious substance." View Watt's series of 40 water images throughout the Bay.
Effort to Increase Interest in Science & Technology Successful
Engineering science professor, Shally Saraf, organized two half-day outreach efforts for El
Molino and Novato High schools as part of a wide ranging Cal-PASS (California Partnership for Achieving Student Success) effort to track and increase K-12 student interest in science and technology. Talks by Saraf and Dean Saeid Rahimi highlighted the importance and excitement of pursuing an education in science and technology.
The students experimented with specially designed setups in electronics, lasers, optics, and robotics, which gave them glimpses of the technical work that engineers and scientists undertake. In addition, engineering science students Daniel Sanchez, Brooks Hanley, Jason Ghiraldini and Eric Frank guided the high school students and staff through the laboratory tours and talked about their motivation and experiences studying engineering at SSU. When asked about the experience, a student from Novato High said “This was one of the best field trips I’ve even been on. I love the atmosphere.” A Molina High student said “It was a once in a lifetime opportunity and I am glad I experienced it.” Active outreach to other high schools and junior colleges in the area will be undertaken in the near future. Saraf would like to thank the faculty and staff of Engineering Science and Physics and the student volunteers who made this effort successful.
