Students Visit School of Science and Technology for MESA Shadow Day
Richard Whitkus, biology, introduces MESA students to laboratory classrooms in the biology department.
On Fri., March 6, students from Santa Rosa Junior College and Mendocino Community College visited SSU's School of Science and Technology as part of the MESA (Math, Engineering, Science Achievement) Shadow Day. Students attended math and chemistry lectures, toured laboratory facilities, were engaged in chemistry, engineering, and physics demonstrations, learned about admissions and EOP opportunities, and met with faculty in their disciplines. Dean Saeid Rahimi welcomed students and highlighted the important role they play in meeting the science and technology challenges faced by California and the nation.
MESA aims to recruit, retain and graduate more students from educationally disadvantaged backgrounds in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. SSU MESA completes the MESA pathway for students in the northern California region that are part of the established and growing MESA Schools programs and MESA Community College programs in the region. School of Science and Technology Has New Liquid Nitrogen Plant and Scanning Electron Microscope
Facilities Services is in the process of building a platform for the School of Science and Technology's new liquid nitrogen plant in the space between Darwin and the Rec Center. "The need for liquid nitrogen for cooling our instruments and detectors and other purposes has been on the rise during the past few years," says Dean Saeid Rahimi, who adds that the cost of construction of the plant housing and equipment is just under $60,000. "The plant will significantly reduce the operating expense of several of our departments," says Rahimi. "Many thanks to our faculty and technicians that are overseeing the project."
Meanwhile, the school is also in the process of receiving its second scanning electron microscope, to be housed in the Keck Laboratory within the Engineering Science Complex. Hongtao Shi, physics and astronomy, is in charge of the transfer and installation process. The microscope was donated by Medtronic through the efforts of SSU supporters in that company, and is primarily intended for the use of undergraduate students.
