Peter Phillips Awarded Dallas Smythe Award
The Union for Democratic Communication Steering Committee selecte
d Associate Professor Peter Phillips as the 2009 recipient of the Dallas Smythe Award. The Dallas Smythe Award is the highest honor given by the Union for Democratic Communications. It is awarded to researchers and activists who, through their research and/or production work, have made significant contributions to the study and practice of democratic communication. The award is named in memory of the late Dallas Smythe, one of the early leaders in the field of critical political economy of communication. Past recipients include: Dee Dee Halleck, Manjunath Pendakur, Janet Wasko, Eileen Meehan, Ed Herman, Vincent Mosco, and Oscar Gandy. The 2009 Union for Democratic Communication conference in May is co-hosted by the Buffalo State Communication and Niagara University Communications Studies departments.
New Book by Jonah Raskin

Professor Jonah Raskin has a new book coming out this spring titled "Field Days: A Year of Farming, Eating and Drinking Wine in Californa." It is about small local Sonoma County farms, cooks, farm workers — Sonoma County people and places. A book party/ launch is scheduled on campus on Monday, May 5 in the University Art Gallery at 7 p.m.
"Bridging the Breach" Keynote
Brett Christie, Center for Teaching and Professional Development, del
ivered the keynote address, "Bridging the Breach: Confronting Newer Challenges and Opportunities in Education," at the International Alliance for Teacher Scholars Conference on March 20th. This presentation focused on the characteristics of millenial learners,examples of promising technologies for teaching, learning, scholarship and creative expression, and ways to support quality adoption and implementation by faculty in a time of significant financial constraint.
