STAR Wins Prestigious Journalism Award

The Sonoma State STAR has received a Best News Series award from the California College Media Association, the banner organization for college and university media throughout the state, beating out University of California, San Diego.

The award was given for a series of news stories written during the Fall 2008 semester on the 16-unit registration cap. The articles were written by then news editor Jessica Anderson, co-news editor Stephanie Harris and columnist Eva Oliver.

"I am extremely proud of the superior work and effort that went into putting that series of articles together," said Chip McAuley, STAR adviser. "Jessica, Stephanie and Eva really pounded the pavement and produced some top-quality journalism on a topic of extreme relevance to students that sets the standard for news excellence. This is our mission at the STAR and I am glad they are being celebrated for their fine work."

Woman Student Leader of the Year Awards

Sarah BorensteinThe 2008-2009 Woman Student Leader of the Year award goes to Sarah Borenstein, who has been involved in leadership throughout her 4 years at SSU. She has held numerous positions in student, residential and academic clubs and organizations. Borenstein has maintained her place on the Dean's List for 4 years, traveled around the globe, and maintained a commitment to her faith through involvement with Hillel. Her passion, and chosen career field, is teaching. She is described as an "exuberant, dynamic and compassionate spirit."

Shannon PosnickThe first honorable mention has been awarded to Shannon Posnick, who graduates this year and also plans to pursue a career in teaching. She says, “ I want to strive to help students grow and recognize their own potential and pursue their passions." Posnick has served as a leadership retreat facilitator, FYE peer mentor, Summer O leader , JUMP volunteer and CSA, all while maintaining her status as a Presidential Scholar with a 3.96 GPA.

Janee WaferThe second honorable mention goes to Janee Wafer, who plans to graduate next year with a double major in business and communications. Wafer is intimately connected to many campus diversity efforts and served as President of the Black Scholars United Club. She was integral in the well-planned Black History Month, has served as a CSA, Summer Bridge Leader, Peer Mentor and Leadership TA. She says she has "met many great people and received a handful of opportunities that have opened doors for me" through her involvement in campus leadership.
