Question of the Week

Question of the Week"How and when was the choice made to make the Seawolf the school mascot?"

"SSU's Cossack mascot has irked campus Jews, feminists and other groups since its adoption in 1962. Cossacks are best known for their colorful dances, horsemanship, fierce loyalty to the czars and - unfortunately - sharp intolerance of non-Christians. Cossack-led pogroms in Russia and Eastern Europe throughout the last several centuries killed hundreds of thousands of Jews.

Prompted by SSU's Associated Students in school year 2002-03 and after extensive research and collaboration with students, faculty and staff, the Seawolf was chosen, as it has a connection to Jack London (who lived nearby) and his book titled "Sea Wolf," although in Sonoma's case, our Seawolf is a mythical creature, not specifically named after the character in London's book."
