Eleanor Criswell, Psychology
Eleanor Criswell, a mainstay of the Psychology Department since the early years of Sonoma State, is retiring on Wed., May 20 with a party from 3:30 p.m.-5:30 p.m. at the University Club.Criswell, who has taught at SSU since 1969, was an early member of the Psychology Department and served as Chair of the department for many years. She is the author of “Biofeedback and Somatics: Toward Personal Evolution” and “How Yoga Works: Introduction to Somatic Yoga.”
Criswell specialized in somatics, a mind/body discipline developed in the 1970s. She is also past-president of the Association for Humanistic Psychology, past division president of the American Psychological Association, and is a founding director of the Saybrook Institute, a graduate school and research center in San Francisco. She was a co-founder and director of the Novato Institute for Somatic Research and Training and editor of "Somatics: A Magazine/Journal of the Bodily Arts and Sciences."
