Professor Joins On-Campus "Live and Learn" Community
On-campus residents living in the
Grenache building had an unusual neighbor this year: education
professor Kelly Estrada and her family of three.
Estrada, assistant professor in the Department of Curriculum Studies
and Secondary Education, is the first faculty member at SSU
to hold the position of Faculty in Residence (FIR).
As FIR, she lives among the group of residential
freshmen students participating in the yearlong Freshman
Year Experience course offered at SSU.
Estrada, who teaches an FYE University
150A/B Identity and Global Challenges course, plays an
integral part in extending the classroom learning experience
into the residential FYE community.
She is involved in planning and hosting a series of FYE community-based
events that embody the themes of self-identity and global challenge, such as field trips, film-viewing and fireside chats.
"I like being immersed in the context in which I'm experiencing
something new. It appealed to me to be in this community of
students I was working with," says Estrada, who occupies a standard Sauvignon four-room apartment with her mother Nicole (pictured above with Estrada), husband Tom and youngest daughter Megan.
"I'm in
constant learning mode."
