"USED" Exhibition Opens Sept. 10 at University Art Gallery
The University Art Gallery is pleased to announce "USED," which opens Thurs., September 10 and will be showing through Sun., October 18.
Ever since Marcel Duchamp purchased a commercially-fabricated porcelain urinal in 1917, turned it on its side, titled it Fountain, signed it "R. Mutt", and submitted it, unsuccessfully, to a Society of Independent Artists' exhibition, the materials of art have expanded to include utilitarian objects that artists either bought or found but did not make. Duchamp's legacy of recontextualizing functional objects as works of art informed decades of succeeding movements, from Beat Generation assemblage of the 1950s and Pop Art in the 1960s, to the commodity-driven Neo Geo sculptures in the 1980s and the more contemporary interest in recycling and reusing discarded materials for aesthetic purposes.
The exhibition "USED" includes five California artists - four from the Bay Area and one from Los Angeles - whose work, while unique from one another, shares an affinity for incorporating nontraditional materials that have been, could be, but certainly were intended to be used for purposes other than making a work of art.
The University Art Gallery is open Tues.-Fri., 11 a.m.-4 p.m., and Sat.-Sun., noon-4 p.m. Admission is free. For more information, call 4-2295. (Pictures of "USED" artwork are courtesy of Carla Stone, University Art Gallery)
SFI Film Opening: "Theater of War" with Meryl Streep
The Sonoma Film Institute opens the Fall semester schedule of screenings with the North Bay Premiere of the documentary "Theater of War". Screenings are Fri., September 11 at 7 p.m. and Sun., September 13 at 4 p.m. in Warren Auditorium. Admission is $6 / $5 for non-SSU students and senior citizens / $4 for SFI members and children under 12 / $2 for SSU students.
John Walter’s fascinating documentary, "Theater of War," weaves together two significant cultural climates through the prism of two extraordinary artists: Bertolt Brecht, a giant of 20th-century theater, and Meryl Streep (above). Written in 1939 largely in response to the invasion of Poland by Hitler's German army, the play is about the devastating effects of war and the blindness of anyone hoping to profit by it. M*A*T*H Colloquium: "11 of the Best Math Problems Ever"
Megan Taylor (left), Stanford University, presents her lecture "From Tsuruda to Sicherman: 11 of the Best Math Problems Ever" as part of the M*A*T*H Colloquium lecture series. Taylor writes, "As the math methods instructor for a nearby teacher education program I am often asked by pre-service teachers, "where do I FIND great math problems? . . . I admit I've stolen (and experimented with) a ton of great math problems. Perhaps part of creating the 'ideal' math curriculum is having a bank of 'tried-and-true,' 'groupworthy' and 'rich' math problems that support, intrigue and challenge a wide variety of students." The lecture takes place Wed., September 9 from 4 p.m.-5 p.m. in Darwin 103 (cookies and coffee served at 3:45 p.m. in the lobby). For more information, visit the M*A*T*H Colloquium website.
