Dennis Harris Memorial in the Commons

A memorial celebration for Dennis Harris, professor emeritus of history, is Sun., Sept. 20 at 2 p.m. in the University Commons. Harris passed away June 22 at his home in Healdsburg, due to complications from paralysis. He was 70 years old.

Harris joined the history department at Sonoma State in 1965, and spent nearly four decades at the University, as both a history professor and a senior analyst in Administration and Finance. An avid local historian, Harris held the positions of director of the Redwood Empire Social History Project, former president of the Sonoma County Historical Society, director of the Historical Museum Foundation of Sonoma County, and director of the California Committee on Public History.

Harris and his wife, Bonnie, purchased and donated the digital carillon for the clock tower in the Schulz Information Center, and selected its music. A plaque on the building commemorates the couple’s gift.

Dennis Harris is survived by his wife of 42 years, Bonnie, his sons Tyler and Mathew, his daughter Nannette, and four grandchildren. Those who wish to attend the Sept. 20 celebration are asked to RSVP Bonnie Harris at (707) 322-8762.
