Close to Speak at National Nursing Education MeetingLiz Close

Liz Close, professor and chair of SSU's Nursing Department, has been invited to speak at a national meeting focused on redesigning nursing education in America. The meeting, sponsored by AARP and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Center to Champion Nursing in America, takes place in Portland, Oregon from ., Oct. 21 to ., Oct. 23.

Close will be representing SSU's Collaborative Nursing Education Continuum Model (CNECM), which includes SSU Nursing and the nursing programs at the five service area community colleges (SRJC, COM, SCC, MC, and NVC), as well as five major hospital/medical centers in the service area, and two human simulation laboratories.

She has also been asked to participate as the leader of a collaborative project, focused on reforming nursing education in California and designing a model that could be replicated throughout the state. Close recently received grant funding from the Kaiser Permanente East Bay Foundation ($252,000) and the CSU Commission on the Extended University ($50,000) to support this project.

Erik GreenyWelcome to SSU, Erik Greeny

Erik Greeny joined the SSU community on July 1, as Associate Vice President for Development. Greeny started his career at Stanford University, where he served several roles in development including alumni relations and development research in the Medical School. Following Stanford University, he went to San Jose State and served as the SJSU's lead development researcher. He later served for four years as the Senior Director of Development for the College of Business and Lucas Graduate School of Business, where he helped raised $19 million in gifts and gift commitments. Erik and his wife Kim have two children and currently reside in Santa Rosa.

Shepherd BlissA Literary Evening at the Quicksilver Mine Co. with Shepherd Bliss

Beginning at 7 p.m. on Thurs., Sept. 24, psychology professor Shepherd Bliss and Chester Aaron will embark on a literary evening of "Storytelling, Gardening & Healing" at Forestville's Quicksilver Mine Co. Art Gallery. Bliss and Aaron are both educators, authors, veterans and farmers, and the topics of conversation for the evening promise to be as wide-ranging as the interests of the presenters: agrotherapy, chicken wisdom, ecotherapy, garlic, literature, poetry and war, to name a just a few. The two men, who met through their individual work on the recent anthology, "Enduring War: Stories of What We've Learned, " will also bring copies of many of the books which they have written and contributed to.

There is no charge for the event, which is presented in conjunction with the Gallery's ongoing series of cultural events; however, voluntary contributions are appreciated.
