Alumni Reception Planned for University Club
All SSU alumni staff and faculty are invited to attend the Alumni Reception, being held at the University Club on Sat., Oct. 10 at 5:30 pm. Enjoy cocktails, appetizers and live entertainment while mingling with fellow SSU graduates. For more information, visit the Alumni Association’s website or Facebook Page.
What to do at SSU?
The choices are many, including athletic games, School of Performing Arts performances, lectures, films, fitness...and the list goes on. Prices are reasonable (sometimes free or reduced for employees). So wondering what to do on an evening or a weekend afternoon? Consider what SSU students, faculty and staff have to offer (see "Coming Up" in NewsBytes each week), right here in our own backyard.
One highlight starting Friday, Oct. 9 is "Dancing at Lughnasa," a play in Person Theatre
in which a kitchen radio called Marconi is a vital character in Brian Friel's wistful drama "Dancing at Lughnasa," as five unmarried sisters in rural Donegal County in 1936 struggle to survive and take care of each other, and the vulnerable members of their family, while the world around them changes swiftly and ominously.
Dancing at Lughnasa is an award-winning drama by Ireland playwright, Brian Friel and is one of his most popular. It is directed at SSU by Stephanie Hunt and features SSU's talented students.
For tickets, call the Box Office (x4-2353 or go to Brown Paper Tickets.)
Half-Priced Breakfast, Every Day
There's a new twist to the half-priced meal deal at the Zinfandel Dining Room: beginning Mon., Oct. 5 and lasting through Fri., Oct. 30, all weekday breakfasts are half-priced for faculty and staff (Fri., Oct. 2 is the last half-priced lunch deal).
Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., employees with their SSU ID receive breakfast for the discounted price of just $3.50. Breakfast is served with a mixture of hot items, fresh fruit, cereal and even pancakes. Check out the upcoming menus at the Dining Services website.
Faculty Invited to Oct. 6 NY Times Luncheon
Faculty are invited to attend an upcoming luncheon sponsored by the New York Times. The opportunity is provided to assist faculty in thinking about how to incorporate the use of the Times in the classroom. "Come to eat good food, chat with colleagues about their uses of the Times, view a new DVD on use of the Times and have a time to work together on innovative pedagogy," says Elaine Leeder, Dean of the School of Social Sciences.
The luncheon takes place Tues., Oct. 6 from noon to 2 p.m. in the Terrace Room. RSVP ASAP to Holly Sautner at holly.sautner@sonoma.edu.
Picture of the Week: Celebration as Seen From the Sky
Sonoma State celebrated its 40th anniversary in a big way – dozens of students, faculty and staff stood in formation on the Commencement Lawn, creating a giant "40" that could be seen from the sky. Then-campus photographer BJ Fundaro (in former Sr. Director for Facilities Management Rich Marker's plane) captured the moment in this photo from the SSU archive. This month, SSU's Hutchins School of Liberal Studies celebrates its 40th anniversary. In 2011, the University celebrates its 50th anniversary.
Do you have an image that you think could be photo of the week? Send it to NewsBytes. Photos should be campus-relevant with a small caption. (Please do not send images to which you do not hold the copyright.)
