40CALS Faculty Participate in Conference Commemorating 40 Years of Ethnic Studies

Faculty from the Department of Chicano and Latino Studies (CALS) are participating in a significant conference, organized by San Francisco State University on the 40th anniversary of the creation of Ethnic Studies programs. To be convened October 8-10, the conference was organized by the SFSU School of Ethnic Studies, and includes representation from all departments within that School, and from universities throughout the state. CALS faculty Patricia Kim-Rajal, Ron Lopez, Daniel Malpica, and Elizabeth Martinez will each share a perspective/paper relating their disciplinary focus and connection to student learning, under a panel titled "Chicano Studies in the North Bay: Surviving (and Thriving) on a Shoestring."

ABOUT FACULTY AND STAFF

Suzanne DeCoursey Welcome Suzanne DeCoursey

Suzanne DeCoursey recently joined the campus community as the new Program Coordinator for the SSU Field Stations and Nature Preserves. She is assisting Dr. Claudia Luke, SSU Preserves Director, in developing the Preserves as a campus-wide resource, and will coordinate research, education and management activities at both the Fairfield Osborn and Galbreath Wildlands Preserves.

DeCoursey earned her Master's degree in Ecology and Evolution from Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, and has ten years of experience working with volunteers, community members, and scientists to integrate research and education with land management and conservation. Her work has focused on interagency partnership and cooperation and, most recently, on citizen science, the practice of incorporating community members and other stakeholders into the scientific process. She looks forward to using these collaborative methods to foster interaction, innovation and knowledge synthesis among educators and researchers at the SSU Preserves.
