STARSTAR Editor Looking for Opinion Articles

Jessica Nezovich, Opinions Editor for the Sonoma State STAR, is actively looking for opinion pieces to publish. All members of the SSU community are encouraged to submit articles to star@sonoma.edu. The deadline for opinion articles is Thurs./Fri. for publication in the following week's paper. Articles must be between 500 and 1000 words. "We would love to hear from the faculty and staff of the University,
and look forward to publishing what you have to say!" says Nezovich.

ZaumEncourage Students to Submit to ZAUM Magazine

SSU's award-winning literary magazine, ZAUM, is looking for student artists to submit their work for the upcoming 14th issue. Faculty and staff are asked to encourage any interested undergraduate or graduate students to send copies of their prose, poetry, or visual art to be considered for ZAUM. For more information, visit the ZAUM website. The deadline to receive submissions for ZAUM 14 is Sun., Nov. 15.

Community Garden

SSU's nearby neighbor, The Holy Family Episcopal Church at 1500 E. Cotati Ave., has begun building a community garden. "Our church is located only a block from the University," says the Rev. Dr. Gail Cafferata. "We want to provide an opportunity for our neighbors at SSU to participate in building a community garden where they can grow healthy, organic, sustainable produce for a nominal fee."

Oversight for the garden is by church and community board of directors, and agricultural advisors from SRJC and SSU. A local farmer volunteers his time to till the soil, and funding comes from quilt raffles. The food grown at the garden is shared with NOAH's food pantry (Neighbors Organized Against Hunger). SAAC and Donate Life California

SSU student-athletes are participating in the National Donation Campus Challenge, a partnership between organ and tissue donation organizations and college, universities, and other post-secondary institutions across the nation, says Jennifer Russo, President of the Sonoma State University Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).

SAAC is organizing and leading the on-campus effort and will work specifically with the California Donor Transplant Network (CDTN). The campaign runs until Fri., Nov. 20 and the student-athletes have a goal of reaching beyond SSU to all of Sonoma County. "As student-athletes, community outreach is something we are emphasizing this year," said Russo, a senior on the women's basketball team.

Potential donors can sign up online through a link on the SSU Athletics website. Student-athletes will also be tabling each week. Several upcoming athletic games have been designated as "Donor Games" to promote the campaign and create donor awareness. Community members that attend the following games can earn free admission by signing up as an organ and tissue donor:

• Sat., Oct. 10- Volleyball vs. UCSD, 7 p.m., Wolves' Den
• Sun.,Oct. 11, Men's Soccer vs. CSULA, 11:30 a.m., Seawolf Field

Undergraduate Research Grants Available

As a part of its allocation of Instructionally Related Activity fees, the Fee Advisory Committee has funded the Undergraduate Research Grant Program for the 2009-2010 academic year. These research grants are designed to aid undergraduates with expenses they may incur in their research projects, such as supplies, equipment, or travel to present their research at professional or scholarly meetings. The maximum award is $750 per grant. To qualify, a research project must be supported by a faculty sponsor and must be directly related to a class in which the student is enrolled.

Faculty members are encouraged to make this information available to students who are engaged in or considering independent research projects. Guidelines and application forms are available in the Academic Affairs Office, located in Stevenson 1041, or on the Academic Affairs website. The priority deadline for applications is Fri., Oct. 30. Low Cost Health Exams Offered by SSU Nursing Program

Low cost physical examinations and health appraisals for well adults and children are available through the SSU Nursing Department's Family Nurse Practitioner Program. Exams are offered on Wednesdays from Oct. 14 until Dec. 12 for Sonoma County residents. The exams are supervised by Nursing Faculty and performed by Family Nurse Practitioner students, who are registered nurses enrolled in the Master's nursing program.

Services include a complete medical and health history, identification of health risk factors, complete physical examinations ($30) and screening tests such as blood pressure checks, vision testing, audiology testing, urinalysis, hematocrit (for anemia), cholesterol testing ($25), and Pap smears for cervical cancer ($45).

These services can be utilized for annual exams, sports physicals, pre-employment physicals, camp physicals and Class II DMV licensing physicals ($60). Copies of records are given to clients upon request as well as mailed to private physicians or agencies. Appointments may be made by calling SSU's Nursing Department at 4-2466, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
