Palmer Gives Pre-Concert Lecture for San Francisco Symphony Orchestra

John Palmer, assistant professor of music, gave the “Inside Music” pre-concert lecture at the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra’s recent Mahler Fifth performances at Davies Symphony Hall, conducted by Michael Tilson Thomas. The lectures reached an audience of approximately 2,000 over the course of the four-concert set.

SSU’s resident musicologist since 2007, Palmer’s lectures range from Gustav Mahler – topic of his dissertation – to Rock and Roll in 1970s England. On Oct. 16, he spoke at North Dakota State University in Fargo about the political uses of the Beethoven myths. Palmer recently received a Research Scholarship and Creative Activity Program (RSCAP) fellowship from the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs to study music sketches by Mahler at the Morgan Library and Museum in New York City, home to the world’s largest collection of Mahler manuscripts. His research focused on the composer’s Second Symphony and fragments of an unpublished orchestral work. Palmer will share his findings at the Thurs., Oct. 29 Arts and Humanities Research and Creative Works Forum, in Schulz 3001 at noon.

Boaz Interviews Nobel Laureate Shirin Ebadi

Cynthia Boaz (pictured at left), assistant professor of political science, recently spoke with Nobel Laureate and global human rights activist Shirin Ebadi (pictured below) on the subject of political resistance in Iran at a "Human Rights and Women's Rights in Islam" conference in Boulder, Colorado.

Shirib EbadiIn an unusual opportunity, Boaz spoke at length about Ebadi's experiences defending members of the Iranian Women's Movement against charges ranging from heresy to "threatening national security." A piece by Boaz, published in the Huffington Post on Oct. 10, reads: "It is widely understood within Iran that virtually all of the charges against the defendants (mostly activists and journalists) are fabricated, but the hierarchical, male-dominated, theocratic legal structure makes it almost impossible for women charged with such crimes to speak up on their own behalf."

Boaz has also recently completed a book chapter on the women’s movement in Iran, and a draft educational guide for PBS for a documentary on Ukraine’s Orange Revolution. To read her article discussing the interview with Ebadi, visit this Huffington Post link.
