METEOR Program Inspires Girls to Soar
METEOR, a new federally-funded program at SSU, launches with a celebration banquet on Sat., Oct. 24.
The goal of METEOR, which stands for "Mathematical Excellence Through Education, Opportunity and Rigor," is to improve the academic outcomes and opportunities for young women by preparing them to succeed in advanced math and science courses in high school and inspire them to pursue college and careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) fields.
"Generally, girls and boys perform equally well in Algebra and Geometry," says Susan Wandling, Director of Eagerly Academic Outreach at SSU. "We want to eliminate the enrollment and performance gap that appears in the junior and senior years of high school. And that success will be good for everyone.” METEOR will serve eighty participants from four Sonoma County schools—Roseland Accelerated Middle School, Mountain Shadows, Comstock, and Cook—for the next four years thanks to funding through the Women’s Educational Equity Act program. Guests at the Oct. 24 banquet include new participants, their families, partner school staff and SSU faculty supporters. Dr. Lorena Navarro, professor of microbiology at UC Davis, is the keynote speaker. For more information on METEOR or the upcoming banquet, contact Susan Wandling at 4-3122 or email susan.wandling@sonoma.edu.
