Rocky Rohwedder Speaks to World Affairs Council

After a summer voyage aboard the MV Explorer in the “Semester at Sea” program of the University of Virginia, ENSP Professor Rocky Rohwedder gives his insight to the World Affairs Council of Sonoma County on his research in Italy, Croatia, Greece, Egypt, Bulgaria, Spain, Morocco, and Turkey. Entitled "Journey to the Mediterranean: Human Rights and Social Justice," the lecture will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 5 in Spring Lake Village Auditorium in Santa Rosa. At each port of call, 700 students were sent into the small towns and big cities to test what they have learned regarding human rights, social justice, and environmental awareness against the reality of what is really happening in these countries.

Rohwedder will share the latest data on measures of sustainability, such as Ecological Footprint and Human Development Index, for each of the countries on his voyage, as well as stories of sustainability experienced by his students while in the field.

Rocky Rohwedder received his B.A. in Social Ecology (U.C. Irvine), M.S. in Resource Policy and Management (University of Michigan), Ph.D. in Environmental Planning (U.C. Berkeley), and has consulted for international, federal, state, and non-profit organizations.

Reservations are not required. Cost free for members, guests $5. More information available at: http://www.wacsc.org/events.html

Carolyn Saarni on Emotional Competence in Children, Nov. 3

Carolyn Saarni, Counseling, will speak on her recent work, "Promoting Emotional Competence in Children and Youth" onTuesday, Nov. 3, noon to 1 p.m. in Stevenson 2011 as part of the Social Science Brown Bag series.

Emotional competence consists of eight skills that develop interdependently in the child, and these will be briefly described in the talk. Although children are resilient, to develop optimally they need responsive environments (families, peers, schools, and communities). In some key ways, our current society is not especially responsive to children's emotional developmental needs, and what will be addressed in this talk are some significant ways that parents, mentors, care-providers, and community members can facilitate the development of emotional competence.

Bring lunch, a drink, and join faculty, staff, students, and interested others hear about current work by faculty in the School of Social Sciences.
