INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION WEEK 2009 TAKING PLACE NOV. 16-20
What is International Education Week?
Since the year 2000, International Education Week (IEW) has been an annual nationwide celebration of both international education and intercultural understanding. Its primary focus is the importance of increasing knowledge and awareness of the world's cultures among students and the wider campus community. But it also highlights the vital role that international education and exchange programs play in promoting peace in the world. For more information about the nationwide celebration, visit the IEW website.
For members of the SSU community, the aim of IEW is to provide an opportunity to learn something new, to find out about international opportunities in a discipline or major through study abroad, and to experience different cultural events.
SSALI Celebrating 30th Anniversary in Conjunction with International Education Week

Since 1979, SSALI has been providing intensive instruction in English to non-native speakers who need English skills to attend college or university in the U.S., or for business or leisure activities. One word that describes the SSALI experience is "family." Students rave about the warm and supportive learning environment--from the teachers who give individual attention, to the advisors who care about the emotional and academic well-being of the students, to the classmates who study and play together in an atmosphere of cultural sharing and international exchange.
During its 30 years, SSALI has experienced a variety of evolutions – in the demographics of the student body, in the best practices of ESL teaching methodology, in the types of elective courses preferred by the students and faculty, and in the technology used to impart English instruction to the students. At the same time, some aspects of the program have remained constant – the dedication of the faculty and staff, the quality of instruction, and uppermost, the inexhaustible energy and spirit brought to the campus by the SSALI students.
SSALI students comprise a key element in the SSU student body. During the 2008 -2009 academic year they represented over 23 countries and 16 languages. They bring with them unique cultural perspectives and life experiences that help to enrich the university. They participate in student organizations, visit university classes, enroll in Open University courses, join intramural teams, volunteer for service learning opportunities, and pair up with SSU students for conversation partners.
