Cominsky Elected a Fellow of the APS, a Prestigious Honor
Lynn Cominsky, Chair of the Physics and Astronomy Department, has recently been elected a Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS). Election to Fellowship within the APS is limited to less than one half of 1% of the society's membership, and is a recognition of Cominsky's outstanding contributions to physics. Her Fellowship Certificate reads, "For her seminal work to promote student and teacher education using NASA missions as inspiration." Additionally, Cominsky was also elected to be Vice-Chair of the California section of the APS, so she will be hosting the sectional meeting in November 2011.
Deborah Kindy Presents in Yogyakarta, Indonesia
Deborah Kindy, Nursing, is presenting a paper entitled, “Students, Professionalism and Evidence-Based Practice” at the third International Conference on Global Health in Transcultural Perspective in Yogyakarta, Indonesia from Tues., Nov. 17 to Thurs., Nov. 19. The conference is a three-country collaboration including The Association of Indonesia Nurse Education Center, Edith Cowan University (Perth, Australia) and Praboromarajchanok Institute, Ministry of Public Health (Bangkok, Thailand). Kindy will be joined by a 2003 BSN graduate of the SSU Nursing Program, Rebecca (Scarborough) Matti who participates in international disaster relief through Handicap International. Kindy will also be speaking with professors and students at Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta.
Lynne Morrow to Lead Pacific Mozart Ensemble in Pulitzer Prize-Winning The Little March Girl Passion
Lynne Morrow, Music, will lead the acclaimed choral group, Pacific Mozart Ensemble, in the West Coast premiere of David Lang's Pulitzer Prize-winning work, The Little Match Girl Passion on Fri., Dec. 4 and Sun., Dec. 6 in the Bay Area.
Morrow has served as Music Director of Pacific Mozart Ensemble since 2005, when she prepared the chorus for the Berlin performance of Leonard Bernstein's Mass, the recording of which received a Grammy nomination for Best Choral Performance. This year, Morrow is preparing the group to record the choral music of Dave Brubeck, a project made possible by a special grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. The performance takes place Fri., Dec. 4 at 7:30 p.m. in the Green Room of the War Memorial Veterans Building, 401 Van Ness Avenue, San Francisco. It will be repeated in Berkeley at 5 p.m. on Sun., Dec. 6 at the Berkeley City Club, 2315 Durant Avenue.
