A Bit About NewsBytes

All employees are encouraged to contribute to any of the sections within NewsBytes, which include:

• About Faculty and Staff: Submit short articles highlighting professional activities - ex: a recently published book, an invitation to speak at a conference, research developments, or other academic-related activities
• Applause Awards: Nominate other employees who have gone beyond the call of duty, via the Applause Award Program
• In Memoriam: Commemorating individuals from the campus community who have passed on
• Retirements: Announcements about retiring employees, retirement parties, etc.
• Student Excellence: Recognizing exemplary achievement by SSU students or alumni
• Workplace: For articles pertaining to employee and workplace issues, notifications and announcements

Stories should be no longer than 250 words, should not be written in the first person, and are subject to editing by NewsBytes staff upon submission. Pictures are greatly appreciated. All entries should be sent to centerne@sonoma.edu by Monday at noon for inclusion in the following week's edition of NewsBytes. Max Shupe "Hitting the Bomb" Against CSUMB

Max Shupe Homerun

Max Shupe, SSU senior and infielder for the men's baseball team, smashes a pitch into the outfield during a double-header against CSU Monterey Bay. Shupe, who previously attended Oregon State, helped the Seawolves to defeat CSUMB in both of the day's games, with winning scores of 15-1 and 6-2. This well-timed photograph was taken by Bill Brown, father to Max's girlfriend, who described the play as "Max hitting the bomb".

Sonoma State Music Students Selected for National Band Conference

Sonoma State University music students Emily Moore (flute), Nicholas Cooper (clarinet), Christina Penrose (clarinet), and Casey Jones (bass clarinet) participated in the College Band Directors National Association Intercollegiate Honor Band at the CBDNA Western Division conference, which took place March 10-13 at the University of Nevada at Reno campus.

The students were part of a select group of college musicians nominated by band directors from throughout the western states. The Intercollegiate Band rehearsed a set of challenging wind band repertoire, led by Dr. Thomas Duffy from Yale University.

Works performed included Canzona by Peter Menin, Cheetah by Karel Husa, Chant Funeraire by Gabriel Faure, Tumbao from Sinfonia No. 3 "Salsa" by Roberto Sierra, Dr. Duffy's own Butterflies and Bees, and the Country Band March of Charles Ives. The concert was presented Sat., March 13 as the culminating performance at the conference.
