Al Jazeera
Was Calling

SSU professors Peter Phillips and Andy Roth answered the call from Riz Khan of the Arab TV station Al Jazeera last month to explain the mission of Project Censored, the campus media research project. Soon enough, it was uploaded to YouTube, the online video sharing network. The video clip is more than 30 minutes long. To view it, visit YouTube. Phillips said soon after the segment aired, the Project Censored Web site received more than 300,000 hits.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS: Faculty Expo of Scholarship and Sponsored Research is Feb. 28

Mark your calendars to attend the 2007 Faculty Exposition being held from 3:30-5:30 p.m. on Feb. 28 in the Commons. Visit Faculty Expo for an updated list of presenters and project abstracts. The Expo provides an opportunity for faculty to share the results of their research with their colleagues, SSU staff and students, and with the community at large. This event is sponsored by the Faculty Subcommittee on Sponsored Programs, the Professional Development Subcommittee, and the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs, with support from the Office of the Provost.

Nominations Open for Excellence in Teaching

Nominations for the annual Excellence in Teaching are currently being accepted until March 9. These annual awards recognize and reward excellence in teaching at SSU. Anyone in the SSU community may nominate an instructor. Each year the award honors two faculty members who have made outstanding contributions to the education of students through classroom instruction and other activities that promote student learning. These awards provide students and faculty an opportunity to reflect on the importance of teaching at Sonoma State University and in particular the contributions that award recipients have made to students' intellectual and moral growth and development.

Any member of the instructional, library or student affairs faculty, any administrator, or staff member who teaches credit-bearing courses may be nominated. To be eligible, the nominee must have taught at SSU for at least four semesters during the previous five academic years, one of those semesters being in the academic year in which the nomination occurs.

Anyone in the SSU campus community may submit nominations. Letter format is preferred and a nomination form is available in the Academic Senate Office, and also on the SSU Web site. A list of those who have accepted nominations will be published and comments for faculty nominated may be submitted until the second Friday in April. For more information, contact the Academic Senate office, 4-2801 or laurel.holmstrom@sonoma.edu.

Learn To Row With the SSU Crew

"Learn to Row" is coming Saturday, Feb. 17 to Foundry's Wharf in Petaluma as part of the SSU Crew’s annual fundraiser. "It is a great day to actually get in a boat and learn to row with the University’s rowing squad," says club president Chrissy Towner. To sign up, contact Towner at crispy848@aol.com.

Lighting Audit Starts Monday

Beginning Monday, Feb. 5, student interns from the Environmental Studies and Planning Department will conduct a lighting energy audit for the University. For two weeks, there will be several students circulating through Stevenson Hall taking an account of lighting. They will audit classrooms (only when empty), offices and hallways. Each intern will have a name badge and will cause very little disruption. Other buildings may be audited in the future. Questions may be directed to Keith Marchando 4-3494 or by e-mailing keith.marchando@sonoma.edu.

February is Black History Month. Visit the complete schedule of events online.
