Celebrate César Chavez Day by Attending the Annual Health Fair
With the help of Sonoma SERVES, the Santa Rosa community comes together to celebrate the life of César Chavez at the annual Health
Fair at Roseland Elementary School on 950 Sebastopol Road in Santa Rosa from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on March 31. It is free to the general public.
Kaiser Permanente and the Santa Rosa Medical Center is offering free screenings and vital health information to the community, focusing on issues of childhood obesity and healthy lifestyle choices. The fair offers bilingual health information, vision, hearing, and anemia screenings, as well as diabetes and blood pressure testing. The Health Fair offers a dental clinic where children can receive free check-ups and referrals as well as information for families on healthy eating and preventative strategies.
The Health Fair includes dancing, salsa music, puppet shows, bike rodeos, healthy food sampling and games for the family. The event features a farmers market and will give away 4,000 pounds of produce to those who attend as well as a free nutritious lunch.
The César Chavez Health Fair embodies the ideals of César Chavez and addresses disparities in access to health care among Latino children and their families. For more information contact Julie McClure, Sonoma SERVES, at 4-3956.
Celebrating the 100th M.A. in Cultural Resources Management
Melissa Gallagher’s thesis “The Archaeology of late Nineteenth-Century Health and Hygiene: A View from San Francisco” is the 100th MA degree in Cultural Resources Management. Gallagher completed her thesis in December 2006. Melissa’s work emerged from three archaeological projects undertaken by the Anthropological Studies Center, which has provided training and funding for most of the University’s CRM theses.
Founded in 1979, the CRM program is one of the oldest in the nation and has been cited as one of the best. Emphasizing the practice of archaeology and history in the regulatory context, students work with faculty in Anthropology, History, Geography, and Planning to develop the intellectual and practical skills to become ethical professionals.
