School of Education Hosts
Mentor Recognition Day

The School of Education recently hosted what it hopes will become an annual event, Mentor Recognition Day. Each year over 300 teachers and administrators welcomed credential candidates into their classrooms and schools. The field components of the programs are integral to effective and high quality educator preparation, says School of Education Dean Mary Gendernalik-Cooper. "The mentors play a pivotal role in guiding, supporting, and assisting candidates in this critically reflective application component of SSU's credential programs."

Mentor Recognition Day was designed and coordinated by School of Education faculty and this year it focused on the theme of the challenges posed by the No Child Left Behind legislation. Drs. Ken and Yetta Goodman, internationally recognized reading specialists, were the featured presenters of the day. Congresswoman Lynn Woolsey also spoke about her role as one of the chief re-writers of the legislation. Support for Mentor Recognition Day was provided by the Office of the President, the School of Education, each department in the school, and the Barbara H. and Robert H.F. Smith Philanthropic Fund.

SAVE THE DATE - The first Graduate Research Showcase is slated from 4-7 p.m. on March 29 in the Cooperage. The event will feature the many diverse projects developed by graduate students at SSU from the 14 majors offered. Faculty are urged to encourage students interested in advanced degrees to attend. The program will feature poster sessions and paper presentations as well as food.
