Nursing Department Takes a Guadalajara Trip

Durng this Intersession 2007, Carole Heath and emeritus professor Sandra DeBella took a group of 14 nursing students to Guadalajara, Mexico. The purpose of the trip was to provide students with an opportunity to experience the culture, immerse themselves in the language through rigorous Spanish classes and have opportunities to see and hear about the health care delivery system in the country. Students participated in visiting vertically integrated health care centers such as a private hospital which was much like a five-star hotel, reports Heath, a two month old Mexican Institute of Social Security clinic with a strong emphasis on health education, a bustling 900-bed tertiary hospital which provided services for enrollees of the Social Security system, an independent alternative medicine research center and community clinics run by physicians and doctors in training from the Autonoma University of Guadalajara. Besides the field trips and daily language lessons, students heard from experts on such topics as the use of medicinal plants for the treatment of disorders including diabetes and kidney ailments and the intricacies of the Mexican Institute of Social Security system available to the formal sector.
