Garlin Retires After 37 Years at SSU
Professor
Victor Garlin, a member of Sonoma State University’Department
of Economics for 37 years, retires at the end of this
academic year from a teaching career in California higher
education that began in l957.
The University community is
invited to celebrate his retirement at a reception at the
University Commons on Tuesday, May 8 from 3:30 to 5:30
p.m., with a brief ceremony and open mic beginning at 4:15
p.m.
From his arrival at SSU in 1970, Garlin has always been
active in faculty governance, capped by service on the
Academic Senate from 1992-2004. President of the SSU chapter
of the California Faculty Association from l995 to 2004,
he represented SSU chapter presidents on CFA's Board
of Directors from 1999 to 2003, and he was CFA's
Northern California representative to the American Association
of University Professors from 1999 to 2003.
Garlin served in various visiting assignments during his career at SSU. He was Research Fellow in the Department of Economics at the University of Edinburgh (1974-76). At UC Berkeley he was Visiting Professor of Health Policy (1978-79) and Visiting Professor of Business and Public Policy in the Haas School of Business (1987-2004) His last visiting appointment was in the Department of Economics at the University of Massachusetts, Boston (2004-05). He also found time to attend Hastings College of the Law, graduating in 1983, and becoming a member of the State Bar of California the following year.
Garlin says of his years at SSU: "I have had the good fortune to help shape the world outlook of hundreds of students, participate with others in the defense of the rights of a sometimes beleaguered faculty, represent the legal and professional interests of colleagues and students, and argue for the legitimacy of critical intellectual engagement with the issues of our time. It is now time for me to reflect on where I have been and to find new ways to use my education and experience in a socially useful way."
