Still Looking to Build Team SSU for Human Race

Team Sonoma State, headed by Captain Mike Kiraly, is ready to rock and roll at 8 a.m. on Saturday, May 13 in the Human Race. The 10K or 3K walk or run is Sonoma County's largest, most successful community event. The campus team is "collectively praying for warm weather, lots of good friends, and plenty of donations to help the non-profits of Sonoma County," says Kiraly.

"Thus far, we've raised well over $1,200 and are currently rated as the third most successful fundraising team," he reports. "Anyone can join us by walking, donating, or cheering from sideline."

SSU team sponsors and runners/walkers so far include Paul Cotter, Barbara Dietrich, Zangean Frankfurt,
Sue Hardisty, Katheryn Horton,
Susan Kashack, Celeste Lerat,
Cindy Menghini, Cindy Piccinini and Michael Van Why.

As of April 11, Team SSU is currently third among all of Sonoma County and stands at 25% over its projected contributions. But, it is still 50% short of the "team total" turn out. To join the team, register at the Human Race Web site. The run starts at 8 a.m. A pancake breakfast follows the event.

RECYCLING TURNS UPSIDE DOWN thanks to the new mini-bin program developed by the SSU implementation team (left or right) Cindy Chong, Mark Bradley (Director of Housekeeping), Jodi Gardner and J.R. Cervantes (Assistant Recycling Coordinator). The mini-bin above will be for garbage only and the recyle can will be the size of the present garbage can found in campus offices.

Mini-Bin Recycle Program Takes
a New Look at Trash

An office mini-bin recycle program has begun at SSU, reports Mark Bradley, Director of Housekeeping. The program was successfully piloted in Salazar Hall and deemed appropriate to launch campus wide. The mini-bin program is a waste management system that changes the way staff handles their garbage and is designed to help divert waste that goes to the landfill. It will also assist in meeting the 50% diversion requirement mandated by the State of California.

The program involves replacing the traditional desk-side waste containers with a mini-bin for garbage while providing a larger recycle can for single-stream recyclable items. The campus-wide launch will become effective in the next several weeks. Implementation will begin in clusters, first in the Student Health Center, Nichols, Carson and Darwin.
