Sign a Poster for Virginia Tech

This Monday, a gathering was held in the "The Leprechaun's Quiet Garden" outside Stevenson Hall to commemorate the one-week anniversary of the shootings at Virginia Tech University. The garden was created when a wonderful young man who worked here in Mail Services, Patrick LaMarca, passed away.

Campus community members from many departments attended. Two in the audience were graduates from Virginia Tech and one student had just transferred here from VT. The names of the deceased students and faculty were read, with the assembled repeating "we remember" after each name. After a period of silence, the gathering was opened up for anyone who wanted to speak. The group learned that the previous Sunday, alumni of VT had gathered 400 strong in Mountain View. From their meeting they decided to set up a $100,000 endowment for their university.

Many expressed their appreciation for the gathering here at SSU. Thich Nhat Hahn’s poem "Clouds" was read. Poster boards were set up on the benches in the garden for people to write their own words and will continue to be there until Friday. They will be sent to Virginia Tech along with resolutions of support from the Student Senate and the Academic Senate.

For this week, the Leprechaun’s Quiet Garden has become a place to grieve for, honor and offer support to Virginia Tech. Contact Elizabeth Herron, in the English department and Hutchins School for information about follow-up activities.
