Diana Grant on Classroom
Discussions of the 'ism's'
Diana Grant leads "Talking About the 'isms': How Do Students React to Class Discussions of Race, Class, and Gender Bias?" on Tuesday, April 4, Noon to 1 p.m. in Stevenson 2011.
Grant, a Criminal Justice professor, describes a survey and interview study of students and faculty to examine students' reactions to class discussions of racism, classism, and sexism. In particular, she will discuss how students from under-represented groups are affected by classroom dialogues on socio-legal inequalities (e.g., racial profiling, the wealth gap, hate crimes, and so on).
How do students feel about such discussions, especially in comparison with students from 'majority' groups? How does the demographic composition of the classroom and the university setting influence the experiences of students in courses that address 'bias' issues?
Students, faculty, and staff are invited to share their thoughts and experiences at this School of Social Science Brown Bag forum.
