Hichwas present slide show of "Rwanda and Kenya - the Great Migration and Gorillas, Too"

Bryant and Diane Hichwa present a free lecture and slide show on Monday, May 14 at 4:10 p.m. in Darwin 103. "Rwanda and Kenya—the Great Migration and Gorillas, Too" includes slides of wildlife the couple made on their African trip in the summer of 2005. Bryant Hichwa is a Professor of Physics and Astronomy and a 2005 recipient of the campus teaching award; Diane Hichwa volunteers with several environmental organizations in Sonoma County. Both have been active in several local conservation organizations.

In the summer, they toured seven national parks and reserves in East Africa. The trip started with a sobering visit to the Genocide Memorial in Kigali, Rwanda, followed by an exhilarating hike to observe two families of mountain gorillas in the misty Virunga Mountains. In Kenya the route was planned to visit varying habitats of plains, mountains and rainforest in order to see everything from antelope tozebras, bee eaters to ostriches-plus the Great Migration of zebras and wildebeests crossing the Mara River as they move from the Serengeti into the Mara Triangle of Kenya.

Autism Walk Results

The on-campus Autism Walk raised over $70,000 this year. Last year was the first walk which was held on-campus as well and $11,000 was raised. Psi Chi made a goal to double last year’s earnings. Instead, they went from $11,000 to $70,000. Psi Chi is amazed with the amount of support given by the community and fellow students. Psi Chi would like to thank SSU for allowing us to hold the walk during the school year. It really made a difference in spreading the word about Autism and allowing students to get involved. All in all, this years walk was an exhilarating and successful experience.

An Evening With Richard Becker

Richard Becker is coming to SSU, Wednesday, May 16, 7-9 p.m. to deliver the message; the people, not the politicians, ended the Vietnam War. The event will address the current U.S. occupation of Iraq, how to continue building the anti-war movement, and how to bring the troops home now. It will be a 45 min discussion and a 45 min Q&A and discussion session.

Becker is the national organizer for the A.N.S.W.E.R. Coalition, Act Now to Stop War and End Racism. The Coalition has gained such prominence over the years because they have provided an activist orientated method for organizing political resistance through mass action, and created a forum for people of conscience  to speak out when so many others were silent. Join the movement; come enjoy a night of discussion with peers and community members about how to bring this war to an end. For more information contact, Camellia Patiño 916-396-8994
