Professional Announcements
Elizabeth Carothers Herron, Arts and Humanities, authored the opening poem in the new anthology of PEN poets. PEN is the international association of Poets, Editors and Novelists organized to support freedom of expression. PEN's most significant projects are their effort to bring banned books back into our libraries and keep them available to readers everywhere, along with the Freedom to Write campaign, working to free censored and imprisoned writers, editors (and publishers) across the globe. Membership in PEN is by nomination; Herron was initially nominated by Gerry Haslam, now Professor Emeritus from English. The new anthology opens with her poem, "Trust." Copies are available through the Oakland Chapter of the PEN offices.
Leny Strobel, American Multi-cultural Studies, has received a California Story Fund grant ($10,000) from the California Council for the Humanities. As Project Director of the Oral History Project, Remembering Our Manongs, she will oversee the production of a videodocumentary by the Filipino American National Historical Society (FANHS) Sonoma County Chapter. LeiLani Nishime serves as Project Consultant on the project. For more information on the project visit the website.
