Giving Back
NewsBytes begins a new section this week with
stories about staff and faculty who give back to
the campus in a variety of ways. Janet Henker helps
us kick it off with her story. Send us your stories
about why you make the donations you do - with time
or money - to various campus programs to newsbytes@sonoma.edu.
We welcome them.
Janet Henker, leading hikes at Fairfield Osborn
I
have been an active volunteer at Fairfield Osborne
Preserve for several years as well as a financial donor.
I began taking their docent led hikes held on Saturday
years ago after I discovered them at a Staff Appreciation
Day activity. The Preserve is a wonderful way to reconnect
with nature and find that place of inner peace (which
is so hard when you work at a busy campus). SSU is
very blessed to have been gifted this wonderful piece
of land which we can all access. It is one of Sonoma
County's most pristine and protected wild places. I
am signed up to take the docent training this fall
so I can give back even more by leading Saturday hikes
myself. Donations don't have to be just monetary. I
encourage all staff to donate some of their time to
a favorite campus resource or program.
