Service, Internship Fair on Sept. 6

This year's Service and Internship Fair will be held from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 6 in front of Salazar Hall. With approximately 60 local organizations attending the fair, it's a great way for faculty and staff to get to know the local non-profit community, find volunteering opportunities for themselves or their students, and to explore nonprofit board membership opportunities. This is also a great place for students to find internships and volunteer opportunities (including placements for the Community Involvement Program). The fair is hosted by JUMP, the community-service program. For more information, contact Jeff Woods, 4-3949.

Uses of Blogging in Education Kicks Off New Lectures Series on Technology in Teaching

The uses of blogging in education is the subject of the first lecture in a faculty development series this semester being offered by the Center for Teaching and Professional Development, the University Library, Information Technology, and the CSU Center for Distributed Learning. The event will be held from 10-11 a.m. on Sept. 7 in Schulz 3001. Presenters are Brett Christie, Joel Bennett and Barbara Moore.

This session is part of a new series called "Teaching and Technology." Blogs are showing up in venues ranging from entertainment and commerce to news and politics, says Christie
Many blogs are the musings of a single author; others focus on a particular topic and feature the voices of several authors.  There are group blogs, family blogs, community blogs, and corporate blogs. WarBlogs (a product of the Iraq war), LibLogs (library blogs), and EduBlogs (targeting education) are just some of the emerging types of blogs.

In educational settings, faculty are using blogs to express their opinions, to promote dialogue in the discipline, and as an instructional tool, and students are increasingly using blogs both as personal commentaries and as a required part of certain courses. "It is an easy and efficient social computing tool," Christie says.

Contact Brett Christie ( 4-CTPD), the CTPD Director or Beez Schell (664-2678), Chair of the Professional Development Subcommittee for more information on the content of future workshops in the series.
