ROHNERT PARK - On Saturday, March 28, 7th and 8th grade girls in Sonoma County schools are invited to attend Expanding Your Horizons, the annual conference filled with hands-on workshops presented by women scientists and mathematicians. The conference is designed to help foster the growth of young female students in Sonoma County who may be interested in the growing fields of math and science. The program is open to interested boys as well.
The event will be held on the Sonoma State University campus from 8:30 a.m.-3:00 p.m. The registration deadline is March 13. Registration is $10 which includes lunch.
Expanding Your Horizons (EYH) is a nationwide conference reaching more than 41,000 young women. In Sonoma County alone, more than 400 students participated in last year's conference. Julie Silk, founding member of EYH states, "The girls leave the conference so excited about their careers. They see that there are role models, and that science and math CAN be exciting." She adds, "Girls tend to drop out of math earlier than boys, which limits their possibilities. We want them to know they have opportunities."
The 1998 conference is locally sponsored by Sonoma State University, the Math/Science Network, Santa Rosa Junior College, Hewlett-Packard, Konocti Girl Scout Council, American Association of University Women, Talent Search/Upward Bound (SSU), Clover-Stornetta, Assistance League of Sonoma County, KRCB Television.
