Well-Known Speakers Round Out California Series

ROHNERT PARK - The Writing California Lecture Series brings world renowned writers to campus to speak of their experiences and adventures in researching and producing California literature. The series completes its program with four well-known and celebrated speakers:

April 23 Kevin Starr, state librarian, Pulitzer Price winner and author of “Americans and the California Dream.”

April 30 Wanda Coleman, award-winning writer and poet and most recently the author of “Native in a Strange Land: Trials & Tremors.”

May 7 Ishmael Reed, world-renowned novelist and social commentator and author of “Mumbo Jumbo” and “Japanese by Spring.”

May 14 Ruben Martinez, Emmy award-winning journalist, poet and performer. He is co-host of PBS-affiliate KCET-TV’s politics and culture series, “Life and Times.”

Part of Sonoma State University’s new California Cultural Studies program, the series holds free lectures open to the public at 7 p.m. on Thursday evenings in Rachel Carson Hall, Room 68 through May 14.

The goal of the California Cultural Studies program is to increase awareness of the history and contemporary cultural life of the state. The program is the first of its kind dedicated to California’s literature, arts, geography, history, politics and cultural diversity. Parking on campus is $1.50 (in quarters).
