Interim Provost and Academic Vice President Selected

Sonoma State University President Ruben Armi-ana has selected Dr. Bernard Goldstein to serve as interim Provost and Academic Vice President for the next year. The post became available when Dr. Donald J. Farish accepted the presidency of Rowan University in Glassboro, New Jersey. Goldstein's appointment runs from July 1, 1998 through June 30, 1999 while the search for a permanent Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs takes place.

Goldstein has served as Faculty Trustee to the California State University (CSU) Board of Trustees since 1991. He is currently a professor of biology at San Francisco State University where he has taught since 1976. His B.A. (1962) and M.A. (1964) in biology were earned from San Francisco State University (SFSU) and his Ph.D. in zoology from the University of California, Davis in 1968.

Goldstein has a strong attachment to Sonoma State University and its faculty with whom he has had much contact over the years as Trustee and friend of the university.

"Bernie comes to this position with a wealth of experience as a faculty member, administrator, and trustee. As Faculty Trustee, his vast knowledge of both campus operations and the CSU will be most valuable during this year," said Armi-ana.

He served as chair of the department of physiology and behavioral biology (1972-75) and as acting director of research and professional development from 1987-1991 at SFSU.

Goldstein has been honored as Alumnus of the Year at SFSU (1986) and Outstanding Educator of America (1972 and 1975).

In 1995, he served as president of the San Francisco State University Alumni Association. He was chair of the Bay Area Homelessness Project Steering Committee at SFSU in 1991, and Chair of the Statewide Academic Senate for the CSU from 1984-87.

San Francisco State University's Human Sexuality Studies Program was co-founded by Goldstein in 1980.
