Two SSU students won awards in their respective categories at the 12th Annual CSU Student Research Competition which was held on May 1-2 at CSU Chico. Pamela Abbott Enz, master of public administration program, took second place honors in the graduate division of health, nutrition and clinical sciences for her thesis work, "Exploring the Influence of Geriatric/Gerontology Curriculum in Paramedic Training and Field Practice in California." Merry Alberigi, master of arts in history, took second place in the graduate division of humanities and letters for her thesis, "Sir Winston Churchill as a Painter: The Artist and His Critics."
Certificates and cash awards were awarded to both students at the annual systemwide event, which honors outstanding student research and requires students to submit written synopses in advance. The students presented their work in front of jurors from their disciplines at the competition. Abbott-Enz was mentored by Susan Hillier, professor of gerontology at SSU, while Peter Mellini, professor of history at SSU, served as mentor to Alberigi.
Accompanying the students to the event was Elaine Sundberg, graduate studies, who is the campus coordinator for the competition. Additionally, nine other SSU students competed at the event. Undergraduate students included James Allen and Peter Holland, geology; Amitabh Bedi, philosophy; Rochelle Brown, business administration; Michael Irvin, psychology; and Lee Miles, geography/environmental studies and planning. Graduate competitors were Susan Garritson, business administration; Thomas Griffin, education; and Colleen Lix, psychology. Students were honored at a Friday evening reception and at a Saturday awards luncheon where they listened to keynote speaker, Mary Wooley, President of
