SSU Student Receives Trustees Achievement Award

On July 15, 1998, the winners of the 1998 California State University Trustees Award were announced at the CSU Board of Trustees meeting. Among the three CSU students chosen for the award was second year SSU nursing student, Jennifer Hazzard.

Hazzard, the recipient of several scholarships, including the Presidential Scholarship for two successive academic years, maintains a perfect 4.0 grade point average while volunteering at the Oak Grove Clinic in Sebastopol. She also has worked with the Santa Rosa chapter of the American Heart Association as a school site liaison.

"I give presentations to school principals about the value of good health and exercise for their students," Hazzard said.

Hazzard was a unanimous choice by the trustees for the award. Her career goal is to work in community health nursing. The mother of two is pursuing advanced classes in Spanish to better serve the Spanish-speaking population in her community.

Criteria for the trustees award, in addition to an excellent scholastic record, includes service to the community. This was the second time in the last three years that the trustees' chose a student from Sonoma. George Urdzik, director of financial aid, said "I am excited that we have been successful again this year in having our student selected for this very competitive award."

The Trustees Award provides scholarships to CSU students who demonstrate financial need as well as superior academic performance, community service and personal accomplishments. The one-time $2,500 scholarship is given annually, and was originally funded in 1975 by the Evelyn D. Armer Memorial Scholarship Trust. When the fund was depleted in 1997, a special fund was created to continue the awards through donations from Trustees and other resources.
