ASSIST--A Good Advising Tool for Transfer Students

Sonoma State University has made its first entrance into ASSIST, the statewide database of transfer and articulation information available on the WEB. SSU's first contribution is course-to-course evaluations for the transferable courses offered by the five local community colleges--College of Marin, Mendocino College, Napa College, Santa Rosa Junior College, and Solano College.

By checking the ASSIST database, SSU students from any of the five local community colleges can determine exactly to which SSU courses their community college courses are equivalent. For example, a student who has ADJ 1A from SRJC on her transcript can check ASSIST to confirm that it is, in fact, the same course as SSU's CJA 201. Students can then use that information to see which required courses at SSU they have already completed at their community college and to avoid enrolling in an SSU course for which they already have credit.

According to Katharyn Crabbe, Associate Vice President for Academic Programs, the information on ASSIST could also be of use to potential transfer students at the five local community colleges who might use it to ensure that they are taking the right lower-division courses to prepare for a Sonoma State upper-division major. "The California State University is making a big commitment to ASSIST to make this information available to students, faculty, and advisors, and we are very confident that it will be a usable and helpful advising tool," she said.

The ASSIST address is www.assist.org. The only piece of esoterica necessary to find the information is as follows: the SSU course lists are for 1997-98, so when the first screen asks for a date and an institution, use 97-98 for the date. The 98-99 course list will be added later this year.
