Sonoma State University Professor of Business Administration, Robert Girling, along with three professors from universities here in the U.S. and Brazil have co-authored a book titled "A Escola Participativa: O Trabhalo do gestor escolar" (Participatory School: the Work of an Educational Administrator). The book was published by DP and A Editora of Rio De Janeiro, UNICEF and Conseilho Nacional de Secretarias de Educacao (the equivalent of the National Association of School Superintendents). UNICEF distributed 1000 copies to school superintendents and principals during the month of August, 1998.
The book was two years in the making and was done with the help of Professors Heloisa Luck of the Catholic University; Paran Brazil, Sherry Keith of San Francisco State University; and Katia Siqueirade Freitas of the Federal University of Bahia, Brazil.
"The book is based on work done during my sabbatical and details the theory and practice of democratic school administration containing chapters on the theory of participatory management, Leading and motivating the school team, solving problems and making decisions, professional development in the school as well as 8 case studies from Brazil, the US and the Caribbean," said Girling.
