On Saturday, March 27, 7th and 8th grade girls in Sonoma County schools are invited to attend "Expanding Your Horizons," the annual conference filled with hands-on workshops presented by women scientists and mathematicians. The conference is designed to help introduce young female students in Sonoma County to career options in math, science, and engineering. The program is open to interested boys as well.
The event will be held on the Santa Rosa Junior College campus from 8:30 a.m.-3:00 p.m. The registration deadline is March 12. Registration is $10 which includes lunch.
Expanding Your Horizons (EYH) is a nationwide conference reaching more than 41,000 young women. In Sonoma County alone, more than 400 students participated in last year's conference. Julie Silk, founding member of EYH states, "The girls leave the conference so excited about their careers. They see that there are role models, and that science and math CAN be exciting." The keynote speaker is Sonoma State University mathmatics major, Karen Nylund. Workshop topics range from archaeology through forensic detecting and firefighting, statistics and traffic engineering, to veterinary medicine and x-ray vision.
The 1999 conference is locally sponsored by Sonoma State University, Santa Rosa Junior College, Math/Science Network, Adaptec, American Association for Artificial Intelligence, The Clarence and Joan Coleman Foundations, East Bay Community Foundation/Noah's Bagels Foundation, Home Campaign-Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, IBM, IDT, LSI Logic, Motorola Foundation, Pacific Gas and Electric, Space Systems/Loral, Toyota Motor Distributors, and Tripos Inc.
