After recommendation from the search committee and consultation with the school deans, the Academic Affairs staff and the President's Cabinet and after receiving input from faculty, staff and students, Dr. Bernie Goldstein has been selected as Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. He has served as interim Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs since last July.
As interim Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Sonoma State University since last July, Goldstein has helped develop a campus response to Cornerstones (direction-setting plans for CSU's future), guided the completion of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges Self-Study and created a new Office of Research and Sponsored Programs. He is also an ex-officio member of the Executive Committee of the Academic Senate. The past year has included meeting faculty, staff and students and becoming familiar with programs and practices. As interim, he has managed a budget in excess of $32 million and has been responsible for the Schools of Arts and Humanities, Business and Economics, Education, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences. He has also been responsible for the offices of Academic Programs and Graduate Studies, Enrollment Services, Information Technology, Faculty Affairs, the Ruben Salazar Library, and Student Academic Services.
The University has 5,865 undergraduate and 1,146 graduate students. There are approximately 243 full-time and 262 part-time faculty.
"Bernie has done an excellent job of walking into a position and making significant progress in moving Academic Affairs and the University forward. Not only is he an extremely capable administrator, but he is well liked and respected by every person he meets. I am delighted to have someone of Bernie's caliber as our Provost," says President Ruben Arminana.
Goldstein is a tenured full professor of biology at San Francisco State University where he also held several administrative positions including acting director of Research and Professional Development and chair of the Department of Physiology and Behavioral Biology. He also served as chair of SFSU's Academic Senate and the Statewide Academic Senate.
Goldstein was chosen as Faculty Trustee to the CSU Board of Trustees where he served for six years, from 1991-1997. As Faculty Trustee, he participated in choosing 13 new presidents, initiated or contributed to several important policy changes including an improved third year review of presidents, helped coordinate the renewed emphasis on deferred maintenance and seismic retrofitting, and worked for greater faculty input regarding honorary degrees and stronger faculty development programs, and encouraged better relationships with CSU's sister systems (K-12, the California community colleges, and the UC system). He has taught for more than 30 years and values that time.
"I have learned much from my students and my faculty colleagues, and I understand well the foundation on which a university is built," says Goldstein.
He holds a Ph.D. in Zoology from UC Davis (1968), an M.A. in Biology from San Francisco State University (1964), and a B.A. in Biology from San Francisco State College (1962).
