Politics of the Fetus Lecture at SSU

Santa Cruz Prof. Monica Casper, author of "The Making of an Unborn Patient: A Social Anatomy of Fetal Surgery," explores the ethics, risks and unanswered questions about a new and controversial surgical procedure in her September 30 lecture at Sonoma State University.

Casper analyzes how the medical practice of opening up a women's uterus and attempting to correct fetal abnormalities raises difficult questions about women's health, reproductive rights, and access to health care. Just two of the questions she'll address are:

* If the fetus is a patient, then does the fetus have "personhood"?
* Could a judge then require a pregnant women to have surgery to correct fetal abnormalities?

Casper speaks as a part of the Sonoma State University Women's Health Lecture Series which meets every Thursday through December 9, 7-8:30 p.m., in Rachel Carson Hall 68. Every lecture is free and open to the public.
