Recognizing SSU's excellence in the liberal arts field, U.S. News & World Reports, in their "Year 2000 Annual Guide" ranked Sonoma State University 4th in the west of top regional public schools.
In ranking schools, U.S. News & World Reports relies on surveys they distribute to colleges and universities, verifying the accuracy of information as it is received. Missing data is obtained through other sources.
Seven "indicators" are used to rank the colleges: academic reputation, retention of students, faculty resources, student selectivity, financial resources, alumni giving, and (for national universities and liberal arts colleges) "graduation rate performance," which is the difference between the proportion of students expected to graduate and the proportion who actually do.
