On Saturday, March 11, Sonoma State University opens the Jean and Charles Schulz Information Center for a work-in-progress construction tour. Participants will walk through the building and construction site, hear about the state-of-the-art library and technology center and learn how the community will be able to use the center. The 45 minute tour will be held at 10 a.m. Interested community members should call
(707) 664-2122 to reserve a space in the tours. Participants should park in Lot D (no fee required) and meet the guide at the west end of the lot.
The Jean and Charles Information Center became a reality in March, 1996, when California voters approved a $3 billion bond issue to address the needs of K-12 schools, community colleges, and public universities by providing funds for construction, restoration and earthquake retrofitting. Sonoma State University was portioned approximately $30 million to help fund the building of the Center. In addition to a gift from cartoonist Charles Schulz and his wife Jean Schulz, Sonoma County philanthropist, a partnership between the Cotati Rohnert Park School District and the university resulted in a $5 million commitment through a district bond.
Through electronic links with all schools in the Cotati Rohnert Park School District, students in grade K-12 will have direct access, via the Information Center, to the Internet, World Wide Web and on-line catalogs, as well as on-site use privileges. The Jean and Charles Schulz Information Center opens in August, 2000.
