Sonoma State University features an art exhibit entitled Silent Voices Speak Loudly: Remembering the Holocaust, beginning April 1-30, Monday - Friday, from 8 a.m. - 8 p.m. The exhibit will be held in the Intercultural Center Gallery of the Student Union Building.
The exhibit represents artist Barbara Shilo's struggle to put a human face on a devastating event of the Holocaust. Shilo spent her early childhood in Germany until Hitler came to power in 1933, where her life and the lives of millions changed forever. Shilo's paintings create a remembrance of this time in history. Shilo says, "My intention in doing this project is very simple. I wish to give voice to those who lost their voice more than fifty years ago!"
The 14 mixed media in the exhibition are based on black and white documentary photographs taken in Europe between 1933 and 1945 obtained from the archives of the U.S. Holocaust Museum in Washington D.C. Shilo has been exhibited in museums and galleries throughout the U.S. and Remembering the Holocaust is her latest creation recently exhibited in the Jewish Museum of San Francisco and scheduled to show in the Presidio next year, followed by a country-wide tour.
