An Opportunity for K-8 Teachers to Stay Current in Science

Ever wonder how we know the distance to Venus or to our nearest stellar neighbor, Proxima Centauri? Did you know that you used to be able to walk from Florida to Spain and their separation has had profound impacts on the animals of Earth? The North Bay Science Project is offering free one-day workshops for K-8 teachers in Solano County in the areas of Earth/Space Science and Life Science. Besides boning up on subject content, participating teachers will also have the opportunity to explore subject-related teaching methods designed to improve their effectiveness in teaching.

The workshop will take place at Bransford Elementary School in Fairfield, starting at 8:30 a.m. Registration and additional information can be found at http://perry.sonoma.edu/nbsp or by calling 707.664.2244.

Dr. Derek Girman from Sonoma State University's Department of Biology and Dr. Laura Whitlock from Department of Physics and Astronomy will present the morning talks focused on science content. The topics for these presentations will include "How far is far? Distance Demystified," for the Earth/Space Science section and "Major Changes and Minor Alterations in Living Systems," for the Life Sciences section. In the afternoon, presentations on teaching philosophies and strategies will be conducted by Al and Sharon Janulaw, two Master Teachers with more than 50 years of combined experience with K-12 science teaching.

The North Bay Science Project is a designated California Science Project Site headquartered at Sonoma State University. The California Science Project (CSP) is a statewide professional development network for teachers from the elementary to the postsecondary level. This network of teacher leaders works toward the common goal of improving science education for all students in California.

Sonoma State University, with 6,000 undergraduate and 1,000 graduate students, is located in Rohnert Park, CA and is a member of the California State University System.
