Dr. Phillip Zimbardo headlines 18th Annual Holocaust Lecture Series at Sonoma State University

The world-renowned psychologist Dr. Phillip Zimbardo of Stanford will be a guest speaker during Sonoma State University's 18th Annual Holocaust Lecture Series which runs from January 30-May 15. Zimbardo will reflect the series theme this year in his presentation "Fading Voices: Resistors of Evil," as part of the Robert L. Harris Memorial Lecture on April 3 in the Evert B. Person Theatre.

This year's theme focuses on personal testimony and eyewitness accounts of the Holocaust and genocide. "It reflects the organizers' concern for employing intellectual knowledge based on facts, evidence, critical thinking and emotional awareness in the service of effective ethical action to prevent genocide," says series organizer Myrna Goodman.

Lectures include the different recollections of Lucille Eichengreen, Paul Schwartzbart, Rudy Appel, and John Steiner in surviving the Holocaust. Mei Nakano, Judith Whitman, and Libia Yamamoto commemorate the annual Day of Remembrance on February 20th.

Knud Dyby, a Danish rescuer shares his reflections on his activities on March 20th and Dan Doughtery, an American GI liberator of Dachau will appear on March 27th. On May 8th, SaniRifati, will speak about the Romani victims of the Holocaust and their continuing oppression in Europe.

On April 17th, Dr. John Steiner, Professor Emeritus will share his unique perspective of surviving the Holocaust in "Resisting the Perpetrators of Nazi Death Camps."

Sonoma State faculty members also participating in the series include Noel Byrne, Ph.D., Sociology and Steve Watrous, Ph.D., History. Faculty for the course, "Perspectives on the Holocaust and Genocide" are Philip Beard, Myrna Goodman, Ilka Hartmann and John Steiner.

The Holocaust Lectures explore the dynamics of history's best-documented example of a systematic, deliberate brutalization and annihilation of one human group by another, says Goodman.

The free lectures will be held in either Warren Auditorium or the Person Theatre on Tuesdays from 4-5:40 p.m. For a complete schedule, see the website www.sonoma.edu/people/g/goodman/ or phone Myrna Goodman,
