Sonoma State University’s Women’s History Month Committee named Psychology Senior Kristin Donahue the 2005 Woman Student Leader of the Year in recognition of her outstanding campus service.
The award honoring leadership by women students is part of SSU’s annual National Women’s History Month celebration. The Committee noted that Donahue’s nominators called her: “a high-powered, pro-active, caring, school-spirited mentor and role model,” with a "200% commitment to everything she does.” She has been president of Circle K, vice president of Student Ambassadors and a member of Psi Chi. She has volunteered with JUMP, SAFE and the Health and Wellness Committee. Her ESAS involvement includes work with the Residential Student Association, as a CSA, Leadership TA, and a Summer Orientation Leader.
Donahue came to SSU in 2001 after graduation from Beyer High School in Modesto.
Five women were also recognized with Honorable Mentions: Lauren Castro for her contributions to student governance and student life; Sarina Loeb for her contributions to student life, student governance and awareness of sexual diversity; Sarah Scudder for her contributions to student life, Greek life and the School of Business and Economics; Frances Thomas for her contributions to student life and multiculturalism; and Tara Whiteside for her contributions to Athletics.
The additional nominees were: Nicole Andaya, Emily Barker, Brooke Bauer, Vanessa Cavallaro, Sarah Charamuga, Lianne Dillon, Stephanie DeMartini, Angela Flood, Chandra Farnham, Ellen Heimann, Erica Klescewski, Erika Larson, Brooke Lesniak, Erin Louy, Brynn McCandeless, Jennifer Mumaw, Michelle Myhre, Amy Nadell, Shannon Quihuiz, Elise Tessler, Katie Tole, Jessica Varga, Tucker Williamson and Marina Zimmer.
Senior geology majors Erin and Emily Haney, who are identical twins, have been selected as the 2005 recipients for the top female student award of the Bay Area Chapter of the Association of Women Geoscientists.
The Haney sisters will be honored at a dinner in San Francisco on May 6 with faculty from the SSU Geology Department and their parents in attendance.
Normally, the AWG requests that just one student per geology department from campuses around the Bay Area be honored each year. But this year Department Chair Matt James petitioned AWG for an exception to their policy in order to honor both of the Haney sisters.
During their four years at Sonoma State University, the Haney sisters have proven to be hard working, cooperative, loyal, students in the classroom, laboratory, and during geological field work, James says.
