Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Speech Competition

Dear Sonoma State University Residents:

The Department of Residential Life would like to invite you to participate in our 2nd Annual speech competition honoring the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The contest, open to all SSU students, will take place Wednesday, February 23th, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. in the Cooperage.

Speeches should focus on our theme for the event "Living the Dream" and should explain what you can do to contribute to Dr. King's vision for justice and civil rights for ALL people. Speeches may relate to his achievements and philosophy of non-violent opposition to social injustice, as well as other related issues, such as religion, class, gender, age, sexual orientation, culture, and ability. All speeches must incorporate the theme and will be limited to 5-7 minutes. The winner of the speech competition will receive a $100 Book Scholarship to the Bookstore.

If you wish to enter the Speech Competition, please submit your 5-7 minute speech via email to Residential Life Coordinator, Jerome Holland, Jr. at hollandj@sonoma.edu by Monday, February 14, 2010 at 5pm for review by the MLK Speech Competition Planning Committee. The top 5 finalists will be notified by Friday, February 18th via email.
